This sticky forum topic is provided for WGA members to share their recommendations regarding activities, attractions, and locations to experience in this region. These recommendations may or may not be geocaching related. For example, you could use this topic to recommend a trip to a county park with a few geocaches along with many other interesting things to do and see. Or you could suggest attending a local festival or event held at a certain time each year.
When you make a recommendation, please provide as much information as you can. We are all geocachers, so coordinates for locations would also be helpful.
If there is a need to edit or delete your recommendations at a future date, just post a note in this topic and one of our forum admins will take care of making the change.
Thanks in advance for your recommendations! |

Apparently there is nothing to do in North Central Wisconsin, as there has been nothing posted here since the thread was created 21 months ago.
If you are in Central Wisconsin, you really should visit the Mead Wildlife Area. Wisconsin's second-largest wildlife area, Mead covers over 33,000 acres. If the visitor center is open (Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 4:00 pm / Sat and Sun 11:00 am - 3:00 pm in May - Oct) stop in to see this magnificent facility. The center has LEED Platinum certification for energy efficiency. There are 5 renewable energy systems, including: Wind, Photovoltaic, Solar water heating, Geothermal, and wood biomass heat.
For birders, there are 267 species that inhabit or migrate through the Mead. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking are available on the Little Eau Pleine River. In season hunters find plentiful game, including bear, deer, coyote, fox, upland birds, waterfowl, and small game. There are 70 miles of hiking trails, and a great bike trail (open May 15 - Sept. 1). On the eastern side of the Mead, off County Hwy O, is an area dedicated to dog training. On Smokey Hill Road is an elevated, handicap-accessible wildlife observation platform.
Oh, and there are several geocaches placed in and near the Mead property. |

Well Big Jim, first thing I have to say is I envy you! A teacher like me and you've been a geocacher for a month or so less than myself, and your cache total is double mine! Have to say that my home location is in Northeast Wisconsin but I built a cottage in Price County and spend every chance I can up there during the summer. Have scored just about every cache in that vicinity and there are some great ones. A lot of them take you into the forests so they don't get hit as often as a lot of others in the state. They take time and planning often.
A big part of my non-caching "things to do" include great hunting and fishing. There are restaurants to try and I have so many more to go. The fall festivals are wonderful and they are located in numerous places. Other places and activities I've enjoyed are the Fishing Hall of Fame, Madeline Island, the great small cities and all their wonderful shops, (There's not a Big Box store on every corner!) and I'm still discovering more. Things on the "haven't done list" include ATV trails, canoeing the rivers, snowmobiling, X-C skiing, bike trails, and many more.
I admit that what I enjoy the most may bore others, but it involves taking my GPS, heading down a trail in the National Forest, and seeing where it takes me. |
