This has been a dilemma I have faced for five years now: Should we put "a" or "an" before "FTP"? The consonant "F" would indicate "a", but the sound of the letter "eff" would indicate "an". That is why you will see me using "the" because you can read it either way to yourself, however you prefer.
I would lean toward "an" FTP simply because of the way it is said, like "It would be an honor to get an FTP in the Useless Drivel forum." My major in math is of no help here, but my minor in English will not let me make posts until I have gone over and over them for errors. However, some still slip through, especially typos. |
thus the Edited 1 time note on the post |

I summoned the grammar gods and got this:
Abbreviation verbalised
By this rule, if the abbreviation starts with a vowel-sounding letter, the article used is "an"; if it starts with a consonant-sounding letter, it takes an "a". This would give "an NHS hospital" and "a BBC documentary".
vowel-sounding letters (take "an"):A E F H I L M N O R S X
consonant-sounding letters (take "a"):B C D G J K P Q T U V W Y Z
Given this, I would think "an" would be correct before and "a" would be used before first to post.
I stand corrected. Big Jim's article was correct. |

^^^ All of which would indicate that you are much smarter than a sixth-grader (or her textbook), and that you have excellent research skills and enough smarts to use them, BBG. Now, if we could just get you to quit talking like a pirate! ARRRRRRRRR..... |

On this date in history, canned beer was introduced to the masses. I prefer a bottle, but I might have to hoist a can, later. The tile guy is finishing the grout work. I bet I could offer him a beer. |
