Hi to you all. My husband (LeftyGuitarPlr) and I have been geocaching since September, 2013. We currently live in Grafton and have been there for 12 years. I had heard about geocaching from my sister, who lives in Spokane, WA and has been geocaching with her family since 2009, but I never knew why she loved it so much. That is, until we were planning a weekend away and I suggested we give it a try. We found our first cache in Marinette, WI (Listen to the Peepers - GC1BC6A) and were hooked. Lefty has just over 100 caches found and I have 165 found (I sometimes enjoy going out on my own). We love this hobby because it gets us out and we have found some really neat places we would have never discovered before.

This past weekend, Lefty and I attended our first ever event - the Cache Bash in West Bend and even attended the pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. We enjoyed our time caching and talked to some great people and got quite a few signatures on our Bingo cards. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we have signed up for the Cache and Release event in Beaver Dam on 8/23.

I am looking for suggestions on how to get to know people better. I am not a shy person, but am uncomfortable walking up to people and just introducing myself - it brings back all my insecurities from my high school days. I would really like to get to know people better and am looking for suggestions on how to break the ice. I know many of you have been geocaching for a long time and have been able to develop those relationships.

Anyway, thank you for reading my lengthy post and I hope to meet you some day - on the trails, at a cache or at an event.

- Nancy (NancyCache) Smile

Welcome to the game! I can't remember if I met you or not at the pancake breakfast, I talked to so many people! But I'm impressed, a Mega Event for your first event! And the pancake breakfast isn't quite Mega, but almost. It will most likely be easier to meet people at your typical event. Check out the events map on the left side of the screen on the WGA page and find one near you. I look forward to meeting you at another event.

Welcome! Good to hear that you had fun at the mega event and at the pancake breakfast.

I also will be at the Cache and Release event in Beaver Dam. It would be nice to meet you and talk about caching.

Welcome Nancy. My wife and I live in Milwaukee and love geocaching too. We hope to run into you sometime, but we'll be out of town for the event in Beaver Dam. Sometime in October there tentatively will be a geocaching continuing education event in Milwaukee, where there will be seminars all day on different aspects of geocaching. It 's a great event to learn all kind of things.

Of course, this WGA website is a great place to visit too! My favorite place at the WGA website has to the forum topic entitled "Thread Stealers with too much on their minds."

Over 97,000 messages from Wisconsin geocachers have been posted at that link, most of which have nothing to do with geocaching. Very Happy

When did we hit 97,000 posts of useless drivel? Shocked I missed it!

But Hack is right. That forum is a great place to chime in on anything and everything, and you can lurk for a while if you want to. As for events, I'm similar to you in new situations, but with cachers, you all have something in common, and talking to each other comes easier than in a general social setting. Sure, you will get people who stick with their own friends or who may not take the time to welcome the new faces in the crowd, but basically, all you have to do is say who you are (no one will think you're weird if you do that) and that you're kind of new to caching, and you want to hear about their experiences and any tips they might have. You might not ever have to say another word! LOL Come with a few interesting caching stories of your own, and you're all set.

No one is any better or any worse than anyone else, no matter how many or how few finds people have or how long they've been caching. If you play the game honestly and with consideration and respect, you'll be fine. Just keep on having fun.

Welcome! I am from Menasha (NW side of Lake Winnebago) but I get down your way from time to time. If I don't see you at an event, I will see you here in cyberspace! Smile

I am also attending the Cache and Release event in Beaver Dam (pending if I have any bridesmaid duties for my best friend's wedding the following weekend). I'll be heading down on my own, so I will be sure to say hi if I see you!

Welcome to this crazy, addicting sport/hobby.
