Hello, my name is Becca, although my user is graphicsgirl19. I geocache in central Wisconsin around the Merrill Area. I have been cacheing since I was young with my dad who is a surveyor and introduced me to it. I finally had some free time and made my own account with geocaching.com last spring. I usual take a lot of photos while I am out and about with my two guys, year old son and my fiance.

I used to use my iphone for geocaching however, some of the places we go, I don't get very good cell service or the location gps doesn't work very well. I am looking for any recommendations for buying a new gps. I am looking to spend $100-$500 on one. I want to be able to plug it in to my laptop and put coordinates on it instead of having to manual type it in. If anyone has any advice or recommendations please let me know!

Since you already have posted 66 finds, you should have a good idea of what you want and about how much you would like to pay.

Best thing to do is to go to the primary GPS manufactures pages and do some online shopping. I use a Garmin Montana 650t...but that is a bit out of your price range but Garmin has many other handhelds that are great for caching as well. The other primary site I would go to is the Magellan site as a lot of cachers use Magellan GPS and there is an almost never ending debate on which one is best.

Do your online shopping and if you think you have made a decision but are not real sure...drop me an e-mail and I may be able to help. Good luck.

Hi, Becca. Welcome to "the hunt". I use a Garmin GPSmap 62s. I can download caches/pocket queries directly from my computer as well as log my finds afterward on my computer. I bought it a couple of years ago...I think I paid around $300 for it. A number of cachers I know use the Garmin Oregon which has the same features but with a touch screen. They both allow paperless caching. I think they run about the same dollarwise but you need to shop around cuz prices vary. If you would like something a little less pricey, I've heard good things about the Garmin eTrex10 and 20. They both allow for paperless caching and run between $100-200. The 10 has a black/white screen while the 20 is in color. Check them out on the Garmin website.

Hi Becca- now is a good time to pick up any of the quality GPS units in the Garmin Oregon series.

The 450 and 550 (has a camera built in) Oregon's are being discontinued and are getting sold at great prices right now. These units have been highly stable, good handheld units for years.

I just purchased the Oregon 600 after having the 400/450 for years. The old unit helped get me around 5500 finds and I never had an issue with it.

What was the name of that GPS you had pre-Garmin?

Becca,
I have been using my iPhone, too. I didn't want to drop a huge chunk of change on a unit, so I went to the local Pawn Store and picked up a Garmin Dakota 20 for $45! I haven't gotten the chance to use it yet, so I can't give a review, but the person that owned it before me was also a cacher. I know this because they have all the 2013 Ca$h Bash caches are still loaded into it! I'll let you know what I think about mine as I get the chance to use it.
