I have spent quite a bit of time this winter doing cache maintenance. No major problems, mostly logs that needed replacing due to being found a lot. We enjoy placing caches for you to find. The logs are fun to read. The problem is that on the logs I replaced there were dozens of missing signatures for supposed "found it" logs. I realize some may have been an oversight. I don't get upset over this that often, but the situation seems to be on the rise. As one of the most prolific hiding teams in the state if you want us to keep hiding you could at least acknowledge our efforts by signing the logs. I will be deleting all "found it" logs from now on that don't have a matching signature on the log sheet unless for some reason it is unsignable which is rare on our hides. If it sounds like I'm ticked off you are right.

On occasion I actually post a picture of the log sheet I've found (usually when any other picture would be a spoiler) - I've noticed that sometimes there are signatures missing when comparing them to the online logs. Maybe signing the log is considered by some to be an ALR. Wink

Mr G, I've apologized to a few people about forgetting to sign logs.
The owner of a cache let me know that I'd forgotten to sign on of his and I went back and my signature was already there, it was just different than he'd expected. The people involved got a decent chuckle out of it when I let them know.

Back on topic:
Sometimes I'm so happy that I found it, other times I get lost looking at previous signatures that I forget to add my own. Once I just didn't have anything to sign with and blood is unsanitary. On behalf of the finders who don't visit the forums or maybe didn't realize that they didn't sign, could you at least give us a notice that we neglected to sign before you delete?

Anytime that I have deleted a log it was only after I had sent an e-mail to the cacher explaining why I would delete their log. I even ask them to do it and if themselves first. Only after that will I delete it.

I'm not complaining about the occasional mistake or pen that won't write. Today I checked logs and found that a cacher with over 6K finds had logged over a dozen hides of ours on a specific day and had not signed any of the logs. I checked the logs thoroughly to make sure they had not signed on a different day, but that was not the case.

Lots of times I will compare online logs with the actual log and if I find a missing signature I will also email them and ask them to change their find to a note or go back and sign the log. I have even posted on some of my cache pages that the log must be signed to claim a find.

We sign cache logs. If we can't access the container or what's inside, we won't claim a find. But that's us.

Since no one is making big bucks by padding their finds stats, and since no one is preventing anyone from finding a cure for cancer by not signing logs, I don't need to raise my blood pressure by worrying about this. Sometimes while doing maintenance, we don't see some signatures, but we don't know what the situations are behind that, so if those cachers can live with what they do or don't do, so can I.

If the cache has not been trashed or otherwise compromised, and the cachers who follow can find the cache in the way we intended it to be found, that is all we ask. Our caches don't get hit as much as Mr. Greenthumb's, and we can tell by reading any online logs (and we DO read those when we get our CO notifications) if there is anything hinky going on on a widespread scale, so it's easier for us to go this route compared to others.

I keep track enough of who's been caching in the area when, and what else they have been finding around here. If they came to town and enjoyed a nice drive in the country, their scribbling a few marks on a piece of paper won't make any difference to me.

If things get bad, I should notice, and I might start doing things differently then, but for now... live and let live.

If the log is unsignable (wet or disintegrating) we may toss in a new one if we have one on hand, and we may pull the old log if there isn't room for both he old and new log. We also notify the CO in our log. Does pulling the old log hose up the information for the CO?

We should take a page (or picture) out of hack's book and send the CO a picture.

I don't send a picture of the log sheet to the CO; but since I take a picture of every cache I find (that's my way of taking field notes), sometimes the best or only non-spoiler picture I have is of the log sheet. So if that's the case that's the one I'll post! Wink
