This trackable isnt here

if a trackable is marked missing, that doesn't mean it is dead and gone. If it is found somewhere and logged, it will continue its journey. there is hope for some of these, others have become fish food or worm food never to see the light of day again.

Interesting, I didn't realize it was that easy. I had actually considered taking a road trip to scour the grounds and the cache area (for about 5 seconds). This trip would also involve a swing into Ohio to track down the individual who is sitting on another one of my trackables... Evil or Very Mad

Here is a March 2010 log from WiHibiscus on a TB she found that was missing 5 years. It was named Sole Survivor.

"Sole Survivor. What an appropriate name for a TB that has returned from the dead after being MIA since 2005! My sister and I were dog caching with Mya and Bela on the Wiowash trail. Most of the snow is gone although there was one area along the trail where I was surprized to see the snow hadn't melted. We were searching for a nearby cache (the replacement for Mike's Choice) and found this container in an area that most of the year would be tall grass and other vegetation. The container looked like trash which I suppose is the reason most people ignore it. The TB is in bad shape. Lots of rust and the chain has pretty much disintegrated. I will do what I can to clean it up and get it out in the world again."

She fixed it up and it is back in circulation. So you never know when they may turn up again

Sorry (almost) to revive this tread. Since flagging an item as missing only affects it until found again, what's the harm of marking TBs as missing? I'm not saying it is your *responsibility* as a CO to flag them, but if you personally know it is gone due to maintenance or if someone you trust tells you it is missing, why not flag them?

So far we've "found" more missing TBs than present ones. Most of the missing ones had log entries in the cache log from months (if not years) ago. The most recent note on some TBs have been "not in the cache" and were months/years old. So clearly the owners aren't going to flag them as missing.

I don't want to seem like I don't appreciate COs! I'm planning to place my first as soon as I feel comfortable I can do everything right and make it worth people's time to find it. I sure don't plan to go visit it every week or every time someone reports a TB as missing. Multiply that by a hundred caches and I can understand why COs wouldn't want to be flagging TBs all the time.

Still, one of the caches I want to find as soon as the snow goes down was selected because of one of the TB in it. It happens to have a mission that I am in the position to really help with. It'll be a little sad if it isn't there. (Still will be a fun find I'm sure.)
