This one just got archieved. Glad I got it the last time I was there Sad

Wonder why the CO took it down?

the CO seems to be shedding several of his ECs....I visited another one he got rid of this past weekend...As I wrote the towers cache I have to say I'm bummed he let it go.

Please forgive me if this seems like an overly simplistic suggestion, but I haven't done any earthcaches. Actually, I don't know why it wouldn't work for regular caches either.

Why can't someone, anyone who is willing, simply resubmit the previous cache page under their own cache name, taking on the responsibility of ownership? Maybe change it slightly if they feel necessary, but keep the spirit of the earthcache. I know sometimes when regular caches are archived, another cacher will place a cache in the same spot, or close by, simply because it is a good location. And isn't that the appeal of the earthcache--what the location has to offer?

Am I missing the obvious reason why not? Sorry if it seems naive to ask, but I figure these forums are the best place to ask questions of more experienced cachers.

Hi Amita,

I think there are two possibilities to your question. one thing to note, earth caches are a little bit of a different animal and thus how they get published has a different process. There are others on the board who can speak to that better than I if you want to get the details.

1. You could for the most part just cut and paste and create your own new EC if you so desired. I don't think there are any rules against doing that but I haven't looked either.

2. You could contact the original cache owner and see if they will un-archive and adopt it to you. GC.com has a pretty easy adoption process leaving it entirely up to the cache owner and adopter. I think this is what you were thinking of in your post.

First off - This cache was a great experience for me and my daughter last summer while attending our first ever event (hosted by Sandlanders).

Second - I'm not sure if this would meet the newer (and much more strict) earthcache guidelines. The page has some good information, but it may be a little light on the new "education / learning" requirement. I'm not an expert by any means but have sayed away from even attempting an EarthCache under the new requirements.

It's unlikely to get unarchived as you would need very compelling reasons for that to happen.

Yes you could simply copy / paste and republish the cache but you'd need to go through the whole approval process again including in this case getting SNA approval again.

As I wrote the page if someone wants to go through the process of re-listing it be my guest and copy the whole page and re-list it....

...and yes if rewritten it would need better logging reqs as those on the page are now weak by the tightened guidelines.

Following this discussion as I was wondering why he archived it also, and I think that this one would have to be tightened up on logging requirements like others have said.
Side note, like CodeJunkie I haven't done any Earthcaches even though I have a couple of thoughts on some just due to the hoops that they now have. I wonder if this has drastically cut down on Earthcaches?

After publishing 30 of them I have stopped writing them as I got frustrated with the tightened process and differing views between the different reviewers as to what constitutes a publishable listing.

If you check out the earthcache.org website, there is a link to what "they" consider the top ten earthcache listings. This was apparently based on the write-up rather than the locale, but it might provide some insight into what they want. I haven't submitted any under the new process. We have looked at many features, but we have this little "thing" about whether or not it warrants an EarthCache placement. We've tried to look for the wow factor with location and the variety of geological learning it can offer. That's just our personal yardstick; we clearly will look for any that cross our paths.

I do wish I'd spent some time gathering data while on Oahu. There are only three ECs there and it's so rich geologically. combined with the wow factor. Oh well. Maybe I can look at Newfoundland this summer.

Spotted this thread and checked some more. The stairs are now back and open. That appears to be the reason that the cache was archived.
